HATCH CHART

Catskills fly fishing guides

Early May now and spring is shaping up nicely. We stayed cooler this early April so the hatches pushed back slightly from the last few years but it could pay off in June so let’s stay “glass half full” on that. Some great weather started last week and the hatches are beginning to be consistent. Water temps are riding around the low 50’s overnight and getting up to the mid to high 50’s on the Freestones and similar on the Tailwaters during daytime highs.

Writing this update on 5/9/25 and the rivers are FULL and Thick…. This will take a few days to relax into any fishable shape.

Small Gray Caddis and Apple Caddis are in full effect, and a few Olives around as well as the Quill Gordons and Hendricksons and some Dark Quills are starting up for a afternoon hatch. If you aren’t on the water for the afternoon hatch a well fished stonefly, Pheasant tail nymph, caddis pupa, or dead drift spent caddis may find a fish. Swinging soft hackles will be a good option as water temps increase if you are just ahead of the hatch for the day. End of day spinners are fishing well on the tailwaters but best at late evening rather than dark.
