HATCH CHART
Coming into the last couple days of May now and spring has shaped up nicely. We stayed cooler this early April so the hatches pushed back slightly from the last few years but it could pay off in June so let’s stay “glass half full” on that. Water temps are riding around the mid 50’s overnight and getting up to the high 50’s on the Freestones and similar on the Tailwaters during daytime highs. The forecast shows a mix of days from the high 50’s into the 70’s going forward so get ready for even more bugs. A bit of rain and wind on Saturday AM.
Writing this update 6/1/25 in the AM. We received heavy rain overnight Friday that continued through Saturday afternoon. The USGS gauges are now dropping and will continue to do so as this water works its way through the system. We did need the bump in flows so this will be a nice reset as we go into next week. Once we start to see the gauges trend toward fishable flows we can predict our best chances to get back out.
You’ll find plenty of overlapping hatches on all the waters in the area at this point. March Browns are here and Green Drakes have begun to pop as well as plenty of sz12 and sz14 sulphurs. Dark Sedge Caddis and BWO’s around as well as a few Dark Quills. If you aren’t on the water for the afternoon hatch a well swung wet fly, dead drifted march brown dry, dead drift Pheasant tail nymph, caddis pupa in a riffle, or dead drift spent caddis may find a fish. Mid morning dead drifted march brown patterns on fishy water can bring one up. Swinging soft hackles is another good option if you are just ahead of the hatch for the day. End of day spinners are fishing well on the tailwaters and should be on the freestones now with these few warmer days in a row and consistent hatches.
