Catskills fly fishing guides

Winter was a snowy and very cold one here in the Catskills. We’re slowly sneaking up on spring as it goes this time of year. Water temps are in the high 30’s to just above 40 on the Freestones and slightly above 40 on the tailwaters. Remember that bug and fish activity doesn’t pick up after 1 or 2 days with air temps in the 40’s or 50’s. Everything under water happens based on water temps and it takes a bit for those to build a steady rise into the upper 40’s and so on. A well fished stonefly, nymph, caddis pupa, or streamer may find a hungry fish as metabolism continues to pick up. Early Black Stones and a few Olives around but not in any numbers you can focus on yet for surface feeding. We are much looking forward to April, bird songs, and our fishy friends to come fully out of slumber.

Do a quick Google Image search of “Trout Redd” and educate yourself on how to spot them and avoid them. Our Rainbow trout spawn in early spring and we don’t need to have a negative effect on them by stepping through spawning areas or disturbing spawning trout.
